Cutting Sugar Can Help You Lose Weight

The increase or decreasing intake of sugar is linked to the fluctuation of your body’s weight according to a review by the World Health Organization.

Researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand found in a review of 71 studies showed that the increased consumption of free sugars, including additives to foods and those naturally present in syrups, honey and fruit juices, showed an increase in weight by the average of 0.8 Kilograms (1.8 pounds) of body weight in adults. Studies lasting longer than 8 weeks showed an average weight gain of 2.7 Kilograms.

In a paper published in the British Medical Journal, the author said β€œWhen considering the rapid weight gain that occurs after an increased intake of sugars, it seems reasonable to conclude that advice relating to sugars intake is a relevant component of a strategy to reduce the high risk of overweight and obesity in most countries.”

According to 5 studies that ranged from 10 weeks to 8 months, reducing the amount of consumed sugars led to an average of 1.8 pound reduction of weight loss in adults. Studies done in children showed a significant increased risk of being overweight associated with higher intakes of sugar.

Here are a few tips to help.

1. Eliminate fruit juices and soft drinks

These are crammed full of sugar as seen in the video above! These drinks are one of the largest contributor to obesity – especially in children.

2. Start reading labels

Know that 4 grams of sugar equal one teaspoon. One can of Coke is 39 grams which equals close to 10 teaspoons of refined sugar. One 16 oz container of Tropicana juice is 42 grams (10+ teaspoons).

Reading labels will help you be aware of how much sugar you are actually consuming with these drinks and other foods… you will be shocked.

3. Eat lots of vegetables

Vegetables will fill you up, they are high in fiber, vitamins, unrefined carbs and low in fructose. The sweetest vegetable has less sugar than the least sweetest fruit.

4. Cut out the carbs

Refined carbohydrates like bread, pasta, white rice and starchy vegetables like potatoes cause insulin release, and insulin causes fat to be deposited.

5. Eat breakfast
